Our Core Purpose

Prayaas Charitable Trust is a grassroots nonprofit dedicated to empowering marginalized women, especially domestic workers and elderly women living in urban slums. Guided by a vision of dignity, inclusion, and social justice, Prayaas addresses the structural barriers that limit women’s access to resources, recognition, and opportunities.

Our Strategic Approach

Our work is guided by a holistic, life-cycle approach:

  • We support women from adolescence to old age.
  • We address emotional, psychosocial, physical, and social well-being.
  • We promote dignity and justice at work by collectivizing domestic workers and nurturing leadership.
  • We connect women to skill-building opportunities and government entitlements.
  • We empower women at the family level to prevent and respond to gender-based violence.
  • We work with adolescent daughters of domestic workers to break intergenerational poverty.
  • We support retired domestic workers through care services and community inclusion.
  • We work with men and boys to reflect on their pressure and privileges with and aim to achieve gender justice.

Program Impact & Methods

The organization adopts a twofold strategy: strengthening livelihood opportunities through skill development and linking women to vital government schemes.

  • Skill Building: From 2022-2024, 110 women and young women were linked with different skill building opportunities.
  • Government Entitlements: Prayaas has connected 220 women and their families to essential government entitlements.
  • Elderly Care: It operates seven day-care centers across five slums.
  • Digital Literacy: Prayaas introduced mobile literacy training—raising smartphone usage among domestic workers from 33% to 70%.

Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

  • SDG 1: No Poverty – Promoting economic resilience among women in informal work.
  • SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being – Providing psychosocial and crisis support services.
  • SDG 4: Quality Education – Advancing digital literacy and life-skills education.
  • SDG 5: Gender Equality – Empowering women and girls; engaging men and boys for equity.
